Training Camp Day 2
River City Bicycles met the team at 10:00 for our day two slug fest. 3 State 3 Mountain was our goal today. Rolling out, I immediately flatted , quick tube change and we were off. Rolling through down town Chattanooga we were a sight to see as we rolled two abreast through the down town. Across the Tennessee River and a few more turns and we were headed up the Suck Creek climb. The 5 mile ascent is a beautiful steady climb with Clarke “The Laser” Clingenpeel taking the climb followed closely by Glenn and Todd. A quick refuel and we were back on the road. Next came a nice, long descent, we made a left turn and rolled a fast, hard double rotating paceline before we hit The Forest. This little goat track of a road had a marginal semblance of pavement, probably laid during the Eisenhower administration. Keith dropped the hammer in honor of Paris-Roubaix and there was no looking back as we strung out hard; Bob was caught out and trying to bridge and Thad was being the good teammate when Ben flatted before the forest. Coming out of the forest Keith, Clarke, Todd, Glen, Bob and myself drilled it on incessant rollers finally waiting for Thad and Ben at a local store. Everyone refueled and we were back on the road, immediately Thad was on the attack, We caught up to Thad at Nickajack Lake, we crossed I-24 and Clarke promptly attacked on a short popper of a climb. Thad bridged up in a huge effort. The rest of us kept it steady, saving our matches for the next climb, Sand Mountain. Up the climb Ben, Keith and Todd we duking it out for second man on the climb and with a gasp of air Ben took the climb. Ben only did a small amount of chest pounding at the top. At the top we refueled again and it was game on, so I attacked with Thad and Ben in tow. Clarke came up and Thad went back and the break was on, Ben made the mistake of sprinting for the Georgia line, second place on the line to The Laser and Ben got to chase Clarke and me for the next 10 miles. Clarke and I rolled for a while, hoping that the descent would come soon that never did. Back in the chase group, all sorts of pain and suffering was being experienced on the interminable rollers with crazy crosswinds. In the break, I eased up and let Clarke go; here came Ben with a big smile on his face. A few miles later, Ben was chillin’ with his 5th flat of the weekend on the side of the road. I rolled to the bottom of the descent and sent our support guy Jeremy to rescue Ben. At the bottom, the DS and I were staring at the front seat in the van like it were a city limit sign. I jumped in with Keith to follow a few miles later, the rest bypassed the last climb and hard-core hammered the last 17 miles including the shoulder of Lookout Mountain climb and the climb back up Missionary Ridge to the house. At the end of the day we all had had our fill of the Chattanooga mountains and Alabama chip and seal roads. Day 3 would be yet another attack fest, who knew?
